The Jaredite People of The Book of Mormon

Joseph Smith mormonThe Jaredites were a people whose history is given in the Book of Mormon, an ancient record kept by the people of the Americas and then later translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith. The Jaredites were descendants of Jared, his brother, and other righteous people of their family. They were led to the Americas, by God, at the time of the Tower of Babel. Their history is found in the book of Ether in the Book of Mormon. Following is a short chronology of their history. The civilization existed between 2700 B.C. and 600 B.C. There is an error of between 50 and 150 years on either end. In the chart there are some gaps because no information is given in the Book of Mormon about that time.

Why Do Mormons Keep Journals?

Members of the Mormon Church are constantly asked by the leaders of the Church to keep a journal. President Spencer W. Kimball once said, “We urge our young people to begin today to write and keep records of all the important things in their own lives.” This urging extends beyond just the youth to all members of the Church. But why is this Mormon belief so important?

book mormonA few scriptures give some of the reasons why members of the Church are asked to keep journals. In the Book of Mormon it says, “For we labor diligently to write, to persuade our children, and also our brethren, to believe in Christ, and to be reconciled to God; for we know that it is by grace that we are saved, after all we can do” (2 Nephi 25:23). This scripture illustrates one reason why members are encouraged to keep journals and records; because they can be an inspiration to your children, grandchildren and others. Keeping a journal also helps those who will come in later generations feel a link to their ancestors, thus fulfilling the scripture, “and the hearts of the children will turn to the fathers” (Doctrine and Covenants 98:16).

Another reason to keep a journal is that it can be a personal inspiration. Numerous Church leaders have explained that those who keep journals are more likely to remember God in their daily lives, and that a journal can be a source of strength when things are not going well.

Another main reason is that a journal can provide historical insight and be a historical source for future generations. One example of this in the Mormon Church is Wilford Woodruff. He faithfully kept a journal for 63 years and the information found in his journals provides a detailed record of the history of the Church during that time. If President Woodruff had not kept a journal many of the things known about the Church and life in Utah during that time would be lost. Journals also help maintain family history knowledge and may help future generations who are doing genealogical work for your family.

Alma The Younger Prophet in the Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is an ancient text that was recorded and then hidden by the prophet Moroni. Later Moroni, as a heavenly messenger visited the Prophet Joseph Smith and told him where to find the records. Joseph Smith then translated the Book of Mormon with divine help. Alma the Younger is one prophet whose story is related in the Book of Mormon.

book mormonAlma the Younger, lived in the lands of the Book of Mormon. The history of Alma begins when he is a youth sometime between 100 and 92 B.C. Alma and his friends including the four sons of King Mosiah, were working to destroy the Church of Christ. Alma the Younger’s father, Alma the Elder, was the leader of the Church and he was very worried about his son and prayed that the Lord would somehow help his son change. Alma and the four sons of Mosiah were traveling when an angel appeared to them. They were scared and fell to the ground.

The angel then spoke to Alma, “Alma, arise and stand forth, for why persecutest thou the church of God? For the Lord hath said: ‘This is my church, and I will establish it; and nothing shall overthrow it, save it is the transgression of my people.’ Behold, the Lord hath heard the prayers of his people, and also the prayers of his servant, Alma, who is thy father; for he has prayed with much faith concerning thee that thou mightest be brought to the knowledge of the truth; therefore, for this purpose have I come to convince thee of the power and authority of God, that the prayers of his servants might be answered according to their faith. And now behold, can ye dispute the power of God? For behold, doth not my voice shake the earth? And can ye not also behold me before you? And I am sent from God. Now I say unto thee: Go, and remember the captivity of thy fathers in the land of Helam, and in the land of Nephi; and remember how great things he has done for them; for they were in bondage, and he has delivered them. And now I say unto thee, Alma, go thy way, and seek to destroy the church no more, that their prayers may be answered, and this even if thou wilt of thyself be cast off.” (Mosiah 27:14-16)

The angel left, and Alma was so overcome with the spirit that he could not speak, or move. The sons of Mosiah carried him to his father’s house. When Alma the Elder heard what had happened he knew that his prayers had been answered. He asked members of the Church to fast and pray for Alma so that he could again move and speak. They fasted for two days and nights. During this time, Alma was repenting of his many sins. Afterwards Alma recorded, “Nevertheless, after wading through much tribulation, repenting nigh unto death, the Lord in mercy hath seen fit to snatch me out of an everlasting burning, and I am born of God. My soul hath been redeemed from the gall of bitterness and bonds of iniquity. I was in the darkest abyss; but now I behold the marvelous light of God. My soul was racked with eternal torment; but I am snatched, and my soul is pained no more.” (Mosiah 27:28-29)

After being unable to move for three days and nights Alma got up and told the people what he had learned and that he knew that Christ was the Redeemer and that the Church he had been trying to destroy was Christ’s Church. After this Alma and the sons of Mosiah changed, they went throughout the land teaching the people about the gospel and trying to undo the damage they had done.

The account of Alma’s conversion is found in two places in the Book of Mormon; Mosiah 26-28 and Alma 36, where Alma the Younger recounts his conversion to his son. For a long time Alma taught the people, he converted many to the truth. The sons of Mosiah were so devoted to teaching the gospel that none wanted to take his place as King, so a judging system was set up, and Alma the Younger was voted in as the first chief judge. He was also the prophet and leader of the Church. Later, Alma gave up the position of chief judge to go out and preach again to the people.

Mormon

mormonThe word Mormon has multiple meanings. First, it is a nickname for the members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This nickanme comes from the fact that Mormons believe that the Book of Mormon is a volume of scripture in addition to the Bible. It was translated by the Prophet Joseph Smith by the power of God. From this comes Mormon, Mormon Church, and Mormonism, all refering to the membership and beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Book of Mormon, in turn, gets its name from a prophet/historian named Mormon . Mormon lived on the American continent sometime in the late fourth century A.D. (ca. A.D. 311-385). During his life he kept the records of his people, called the Nephites, and eventually creating an abridement of their history which is the record now called theBook of Mormon . In addition to being a prophet and historian, he was also a great military leader for his people, but because of their wickedness and rebellions, they were destroyed in a major war sometime around A.D. 385. Mormon’s son, Moroni, who escaped the general slaughter of his people, completed the record after his father’s death and buried the record, which was engraved on Golden plates, in a hill in what is now upper state New York. Hundreds of years later,Moroni returned as an angel of God and appeared to Joseph Smith to show him where the records were buried.

In addition to these, the word Mormon appears in other places within the text of the Book Book of Mormonof Mormon. Two books within the Book of Mormon, have it as part of their title. “The Words of Mormon,” and the “Book of Mormon,” were written primarily by the prophet Mormon and deal with Mormon’s own time period and teachings. Finally, in another section within the Book of Mormon, called the Book of Mosiah, Mormon refers to an oasis where a prophet named Alma baptized followers of Jesus Christ on the American continent.

When asked once what the word “Mormon” meant, Joseph Smith speculated that it could be tranlated as “More Good” (see Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pp 299-300).

Joseph Smith, the Prophet

Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and a witness to the divinity of Jesus Christ. He was the founder of the Mormon Church. Like many ancient prophets he ended his mission by being murdered by his enemies. Joseph Smith was born in 1805 in Vermont, but grew up in New York. As a young man, he was greatly troubled by religious issues and was worried about his salvation. He prayed and read the Bible often and attended church meetings. One day, as he was ponder the confusion he felt about God and His plan for mankind, he read James 1:5, which read, “If any you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.”

joseph smith mormonHe immediately knew that he could pray to God and get an answer for himself and not need to depend on others. Some time later in the spring of 1820, when he was just 14, he went out into the woods near his home to pray. He pray aloud to God for an answer to his confusion. According to Joseph Smith’s own account:

“I saw a pillar of light exactly over my head, above the brightness of the sun, which descended gradually until it fell upon me. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the other–This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Joseph Smith-History 1:16-17).

This was Joseph Smith’s first vision. After this he was visited by angels who called him to be a prophet like Moses or Paul. He was commanded to translate the Book of Mormon from ancient records. The Book of Mormon contained the fullness of Jesus Christ’s Gospel. Over the next several years he published the Book of Mormon and other revelations which he received and organizedthe Mormon Church. Joseph Smith continued to lead the Mormon Church until he was murdered by a mob in 1844 in Illinois.

Joseph Smith taught that God lives, that Jesus Christ is our Savior and that these are the last days before His return. He taught that every person must repent and come unto Jesus Christ by accepting baptism from His servants who have receive authority from Him called priesthood. Like so many before him, Joseph Smith sealed his testimony with his own life as martyr for religion. He was succeeded by Brigham Young.

Book of Mormon

The Book of Mormon is an ancient record of God’s dealings with a people who lived in ancient America, but were all destroyed around 400 A.D. Mormon, one of the last prophets of God who taught these people compiled their records and made the Book of Mormon under inspiration from God. His son, Moroni, then finished the record and buried it until 1827, when an angel showed Joseph Smith where the book was buried. With God’s help the Prophet Joseph Smith translated the record. From the Book of Mormon, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints get the nickname Mormons.

book mormonThe Book of Mormon tells the story of several ancient peoples; most prominent were the Nephites and Lamanites. The Book of Mormon is the record of the Nephites who for most of their history were righteous. There were many periods of war and peace throughout their 1000 year history. At times they were righteous and at times they were wicked. Eventually, the Nephites became so wicked that God let them be destroyed in a huge war and only a few survived who intermarried with the other ancient peoples in America. The central focus of the Book of Mormon is to testify that Jesus Christ is the Savior of all mankind and that the only path to peace and salvation is to follow Him. The highlight of the Book of Mormon is when Jesus Christ visits the Nephites after His resurrection to teach them the Gospel.

The Book of Mormon is written for our day. It is a voice of warning, reminding us all of the dangers of ignoring God and rejecting His prophets. It contains the basics of what Mormons do believe about Jesus Christ and teaches clearly about faith, repentance, and obedience to God. The Prophet Joseph Smith said, “the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book” (History of The Church 4:461).

To know if the Book of Mormon is really the word of God, you must read it, ponder it, and pray to God to tell you if it is true. You must compare its teachings to those of the Bible. Only by the power of the Holy Ghost can a person truly know if the Book of Mormon comes from God. See the Mormon Church’s website to get your own free copy of the Book of Mormon.

Mormon Missionaries

Mormon MissionariesThey are the Mormon Missionaries, young men and women who devote eighteen months to two years of their life to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ as restored through the living prophets of the Mormon Church. These young Mormon missionaries put schooling, dating, and careers on hold because they know that their message is important for everyone to hear. They mostly pay their own way, or get help from family and friends, work six days a week, twelve hours a day and only call home twice a year, though they can write letters frequently and email if they access.Mormon missionaries are expected to wake up every morning at 6:30 A.M., after which they study the scriptures and prepare for their day. In a typical day, a pair of Mormon missionaries will hand out copies ofthe Book of Mormon, share their witnesses to dozens, maybe hundreds of people that Jesus Christ lives and that Joseph Smith was a modern prophet and that the Mormon Church is God’s Church restored to the earth. In addition to handing out copies of the Book of Mormon, Mormon missionaries also hand out Bibles, videos about the life of Jesus Christ, and pamphlets and other items designed to strengthen families.

Contrary to popular belief, Mormon missionaries are not some highly trained, highly skilled propaganda force. They are regular people, young men and women, who comprise most of the 55,000 missionaries, or even retired couples (nearly 5,000 in any given year), who put their every-day life on hold to shmormonare the Gospel and the Book of Mormon. They receive only a few weeks of training on how to talk to people and avoid confrontation when speaking about religion. Some receive language training for a few weeks. Beyond that, most of them have been going to Church for years and learned about the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Sunday School or other Church meetings. They may not know everything there is to know about the scriptures, but they have powerful testimonies of the truthfulness of their message. All Mormon Missionaries travel two by two just as the Lord Jesus directed his Apostles:

And he called unto him the twelve, and began to send them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean spirits (Mark 6:7).
